Hypnotherapy Explained - What Is It and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle yet powerful therapeutic technique that helps you make positive changes by working directly with your subconscious mind. It's a fully collaborative process, not stage hypnosis, and definitely not mind control. Instead, it's a focused state of relaxation where you're more open to suggestion, insight, and healing.

The Hypnotherapy Process

Here's what a typical hypnotherapy session looks like with me:

1. Relax & Settle In
You’ll be guided into a deeply relaxed state using calming breathing and visualisation techniques. This isn’t sleep or loss of control, it’s simply a focused, peaceful state where your mind becomes more open to positive change.

2. Positive Change Begins
While you’re relaxed, we work directly with the subconscious mind to uncover and release unhelpful patterns and reinforce healthier ones.

Depending on your goals, this may include:

  • Suggestion therapy - Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy

Ideal for issues such as confidence, stress, exam nerves, removing phobias, nail biting, or relaxation. This approach is practical and results-driven, often requiring 1-3 sessions.

  • Hypno-analysis (Deeper Work)

For long-standing or emotionally rooted challenges, hypno-analysis helps uncover and resolve the underlying cause, not just the symptoms. Gaining awareness and releasing buried emotions allows genuine transformation. This process usually involves 6-12 sessions.

3. Return Feeling Refreshed
You’ll be gently brought back to full awareness, feeling calm, lighter, and with greater clarity.

You’re Always in Control - Hypnotherapy feels like accessing your mind’s own’ control room’. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the session; nothing happens without your consent. It’s a safe, natural process that empowers change from within.

Is Hypnotherapy Right for Me?

Most clients are initially unsure. Common concerns include:

  • “Will I lose control?”

  • “What if I can’t be hypnotised?”

  • “Is it like stage hypnosis I’ve seen on TV?”

The reality? All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You remain aware and in control at all times. You can speak, open your eyes, or even end the session if you choose. It’s more like guided daydreaming, where your subconscious becomes more accessible, without any loss of control or awareness.

Subsequent sessions build on this foundation, deepening the hypnotherapy work to reinforce positive change, resolve underlying causes, and guide you toward lasting clarity and transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • It feels a lot like being in a deep daydream, relaxed, focused, and fully in control.  Everyone’s experience is different, but most people leave feeling lighter and calmer, with greater insight and relief.

  • This varies based on your goal. Some clients see change in just one session, while others benefit from a tailored plan over several weeks - a maximum of 12 sessions.

  • Absolutely. Your privacy and comfort are central to the therapeutic relationship. The caveat to this is if there is a concern about actual or possible serious physical harm or death to yourself or others.

  • Hypnotherapy is generally safe for most people, but there are some conditions where it may be inadvisable or require special caution. These include:

    • Severe mental health disorders: For example, schizophrenia, psychosis, or severe bipolar disorder, where hypnotherapy could potentially exacerbate symptoms.

    • Severe depression or suicidal tendencies.

    • Severe trauma or PTSD: While hypnotherapy can be helpful, it requires an experienced, trauma-informed practitioner to avoid traumatisation.

    • Epilepsy: hypnosis is not suitable as it can sometimes trigger seizures

    • Severe substance abuse or withdrawal.

It’s important to discuss your full medical and mental health history with your hypnotherapist beforehand. If you have any of these conditions, your therapist can help determine if hypnotherapy is appropriate. Services offered are not intended to substitute those provided by a mental health professional (doctor, clinical psychologist, or psychiatrist)
